Ever since I created the first version of this video a year ago I've been wanting to try it again with more water and better lighting / footage. This is a really fun project and when you first see the results, chances are your jaw will drop. The main thing to keep in mind for this project is that you need a camera that shoots 24 fps.
The effect that you are seeing can't be seen with the naked eye. The effect only works through the camera. However, there is a version of the project you can do where the effect would be visible with the naked eye. For that project, you'd have to use a strobe light.
For this project you'll need:
A powered speaker
Water source
Soft rubber hose
Tone generating software
24 fps camera
Tape.
Run the rubber hose down past the speaker so that the hose touches the speaker. Leave about 1 or 2 inches of the hose hanging past the bottom of the speaker. Secure the hose to the speaker with tape or whatever works best for you. The goal is to make sure the hose is touching the actual speaker so that when the speaker produces sound (vibrates) it will vibrate the hose.
Set up your camera and switch it to 24 fps. The higher the shutter speed the better the results. But also keep in the mind that the higher your shutter speed, the more light you need. Run an audio cable from your computer to the speaker. Set your tone generating software to 24hz and hit play.Turn on the water. Now look through the camera and watch the magic begin. If you want the water to look like it's moving backward set the
frequency to 23hz. If you want to look like it's moving forward in slow motion set it to 25hz.
Have fun!

I was inspired by the following video. The first thing I thought when I saw the video is "I wonder if I can make a bigger bubble?" So I gave it a try. http://youtube.com/watch?v=76CNkxizQuc
I wanted to make my own bubble solution to try and get the strongest possible bubble. It's possible you can get the same results using store bought bubble solution.
I used
Dawn Dish Detergent 5 tablespoons
Glycerin (95%) 4 tablespoons
Distilled Water 1 cup
Stir it really good but try not to stir up any bubbles.
I used 100% cotton for the cloth strip.
Dry ice.
Be sure to wear gloves when handling the dry ice.
It was definitely easier to make a bubble across the smaller bowl. If you try to make a bubble across a large bowl, you may have to try many times until you get lots of the bubble solution coating the edges.
In the smaller plastic bowl I used about 2 or 3 pounds of dry ice and filled it with hot water. When you first drop in your dry ice and water, the bubble will form and pop quickly. It also releases the best looking "smoke" After about the 5th bubble, they start taking longer to form but will produce some interesting looking effects.
In the large black tub, I used 10 pounds of dry ice and enough hot water to cover the ice.
Have fun!

These are so simple but always so amazing to see.
I did 3 anamorphic illusions. Rubiks cube, a roll of tape and a shoe. Which one is your favorite? I like the shoe the best.
Oh and lets not for the kitty cat. Hyder thought she was anamorphic for a bit there.
I've included the images in this video for you to download and try yourself. Print them on 8.5 X 14. Cut the paper any way you'd like to add more of an effect.

Had to drain the pool for repairs. Thought it would be a perfect opportunity for an illusion. So what can I do for a pool illusion? How about a pool ball? Kinda cheesey but I thought it turned out pretty good. I wanted to do an 8 ball but the blue tape worked perfectly for the 2 ball. The ending of the video was quite a surprise when the illusion caught the attention of the kitty cat.

The liquids stack in layers because each liquid has a different density
You'll need:
Empty bottle
measuring cup
dark corn syrup
dish washing liquid
water (add food coloring)
vegetable oil
rubbing alcohol (add food coloring)
Fill your bottle with water then pour it into a measuring cup, keeping track of how many total oz the bottle held. Then divide the number of liquids you want to stack, into the total amount of oz. That will tell you how many oz of each liquid you should pour into the bottle so that the layers are equal in size. Obviously if you want to have different sized layers, you can.
When you add the corn syrup and dish washing liquid be sure to let the liquid drop straight into the container so that it doesnt touch the sides. When you add the water, vegetable oil and alcohol, tilt the bottle and let the liquid run slowly down the sides. If you pour it in too fast, it will mix with the other liquids.
I don't recommended turning your bottle upside down, the colors may separate a little but it will never be as good as the original.

I was asked by Youtube to participate in their "Play Means Business" Program. They gave me the statistic of "500 years of youtube videos are watched each day through social media sites" and asked if I could build an illusion around it. I thought VHS tapes would be a nice way to portray "video" and would be easy to work with to create the illusion. The only effects added to this video are the words added to the floor below "500 years" at the end of the video. This illusion was the most involved and most difficult illusion I've ever created. And it had to be created in a short period of time. Many thanks to Djamila and my dad for helping me with the project. If they weren't involved I could have never pulled it off. I had to find a building large enough to pull off the project. I was lucky to find a 100 year old building for rent and the owner was willing to rent it for the 5 or 6 days that I needed it. Then we had to build a 16 X 16 foot wooden structure from which I could suspend the tapes. We covered the wooden structure with chicken wire to have multiple points to hang the tapes from. One of the most challenging parts of the project was suspending the structure. It weighed about 300 pounds. We called in a friend that wasnt afraid to climb up the 100 year old wooden columns and beams to hook up a pully. After an hour of climbing and hooking up ropes, he tied the lose end of the rope to his truck and then backed his truck up which raised the structure 12 feet in the air. Now it was time to start hanging tapes. We had to tie 2 pieces of string to each tape and then run the top of the string through a paper clip. I used the paper clips as a hook. We started hanging tapes at 3pm on thursday and worked nonstop until 5am Friday. I calculated that I climbed the 8 foot ladder a total of 1000 times. We were all extremely tired by the end of the process. We were all very excited at the end result. I
filmed the illusion the following day and submitted the footage to youtube. They were very happy with the results.
If you enjoy the video, please share it with your friends. Thanks!

This is really simple but has such an awesome effect. Fill a bucket full of water and place it about 5 feet off the ground. Place a subwoofer about 1 foot lower than the bucket. Run a plastic tube from the top bucket down in front of the subwoofer. Tape the tube to the front of the speaker. Then aim the end of the tube to an empty bucket on the floor. Get the water flowing from the top bucket. Now just generate a 24 hz sine wave and set your camera to 24 fps and watch the magic happen. Basically your cameras frame rate is synced up with the rate of the vibrations of the water so it appears to be frozen or still. Now if you play a 23 hz sine wave your frame rate will be off just a little compared to the sine wave causing the water to "move backward" or so as it appears. You can play a 25 hz sine wave and cause the water to move slowly foward.
Really fun experiment. You should definitely give it a try.

This is such a simple yet cool trick to do with duct tape. Just take a piece of duct tape and fold it over on itself (sticky sides facing each other) then pull them apart in the dark. You will see blue light from where the tape is being pullled apart. This effect is called triboluminescence which is the glow given off when some materials are subjected to mechanical stress or friction. The faster you pull, the brighter the light will be.

Gyroscopes are just so cool. The device in this video can be found on science websites. If you've never played with a gyroscope, it's worth buying one. Even when you see videos of them, nothing really gives you the true feel of how magical they are until you play with it yourself. Obviously gyroscopes are more than just toys, they can be found in trains, ships, airplanes, satellites etc.
I wanted to put this video out as a basic demonstration of the properties of gyroscopes. I've got another video in the works about gyroscopes coming later this year. It will be worth the wait. :)

This is such a simple project with really fun results. The box doesn't have to be the exact dimensions as the one in the video. You can experiment with the size. You also don't need to use a fog machine. I used one so that the air being pushed from the cannon would be visible. It's really quite amazing how far the burst of air can travel. I was able to knock a cup off a table from 25 feet away.
Have fun!

Believe it or not, this was my biggest effort on any videos I've done. It took the most time, the most patience, the most research and the most money to create. Surprisingly one of the hardest things was to find bulk colored push pins. I ended up having to order about 40,000 push pins in "variety packs" in order to get all of the colors I needed. There are approximately 15,000 push pins in the portrait. I worked on it a little each day for about a month. The final portrait weighs about 40 pounds, which includes the cork board. I built a wooden frame to support it. I was afraid that when I lifted it, it would break under it own weight. So the frame worked out perfectly. In the video it looks like there is a problem with the forehead, but it's just the light reflecting.
The girl in the portrait is Dxdutch. I definitely couldnt have created this without her. She helped so much. Thank you!

Simple yet amazing illusion.
There are 2 sets of lines moving back and forth perpendicularly but when the paper squares are placed on the screen the lines suddenly appear to be a square moving in a circular motion.

I know this video isn't my best but I thought I would try to get a video out before x-mas. I used about 800 feet of christmas lights. I had no idea how this was going to turn out. I don't think it was bad and will probably go for a bigger better version of this in the future.
As you get closer to the bottom of the star it's get more difficult to create a shape. The string of lights is really difficult to bend and shape into the design you want so It's hard to get good detail.

NOTE: This device doesnt float any object. You have to place the special magnetic disc that comes with the unit, inside of the objects you want to float.
The device I'm using in this video is the Levitron Revolution. Normally you are supposed to place an object on top of the magnetic disc. Obviously you can have a lot of fun doing that and get great results but I wanted to take it a step further by hiding the disc inside what ever object I was trying to float. To see the object floating "by itself" just gives a much more dramatic feel. To float the
rubiks cube, I had to drill out a hole in the cube big enough for the disc to fit in. I felt really bad destroying a rubiks cube but I thought the final result was worth it.
This is a special wire called Nitinol memory wire. It's an alloy that "remembers" it's original shape. You can set almost any shape that you want by using an extreme source of heat. After the wire cools, you can bend the wire into any shape but when you heat it, it will return to the original shape.
You can order this wire from several science websites. Just do a search for "Nitinol memory wire". It's a lot of fun to play around with.

For me, this is still one of the most amazing illusions. The design is just so simple and yet the illusion is so amazing.
This illusion has been around for a long time but always in the form of an image. It was created by MIT professor Edward H. Adelson. I wanted to take it from a flat piece of paper and turn it into a real, life sized illusion that I could interact with to demonstrate the effect.
The illusion works because of the "shadow" that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesnt exist, you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow.
So if you were able to pick up the middle square and move it to one of the outside dark squares, they would be 2 different shades, But the trick is ..that when you move the square you are moving it WITH the shadow still printed on the square. So now you've moved it out of its relative area, outside of the shadow region (but with the shadow still printed on the square) ..to the area where it's the same shade as the "dark" square.

This is a pretty old trick but still very impressive. If you take a wooden ruler and lay it on the edge of a table and try to break it by bringing a force down on it, the ruler will just fly off of the table. But when you lay a piece of paper on top of the ruler then the surface area that the air is resting on is much greater than it was when it was resting on the ruler alone. So with all of the air pressure on the newspaper, the ruler is unable to move when quick force is applied to it, causing the ruler to break.
Give this trick a try, but be careful, the ruler can fly up and hit your face or hit an object in the house.
The reason i blurred out the newspaper is because logo's and businesses appeared in those ads.

A little non-illusion video ....was having fun hanging with my family. We built a tower consisting of 500 wooden pieces. The tower was around 7 to 8 feet tall. We tied fishing line to my ipod touch and lowered down the tower. It bumped into the tower a couple of times on the way down causing the tower to sway but it held tough. We took pieces from the bottom so that the ipod could be removed then we destroyed the tower.
And in case you were wondering, I'm not Dutch. I'm visiting my gf's family in Holland. :)

I created this illusion by placing a chair in the middle of the room and shining a bright light on it which created a shadow. I cut black poster board and taped it so that it covered the shadow. Then I moved the light source to the opposite side of the room and shined it on the chair which created another shadow. Again, I cut black poster board and taped it so that it covered the shadow. Then I just removed the actual chair from inbetween the 2 shadows. The whole process took about 10 hours.

A little extra footage of the aftermath of creating this illusion. I used about 15 sheets of black poster board and a lot of tape. I created the "shadows by placing a real chair in the "center" of where the 2 shadows will be and shining a light on the chair which created a real shadow. Then I cut the poster board and taped it over the real shadow. After I finished the first shadow I placed the light on the other side of the chair which created another shadow. I cut and taped the posterboard for that shadow. So the original idea for this video was create the illusion that a chair was sitting in the room and casting a shadow, but when you move the camera to the other side ..the chair now becomes the new shadow and the old shadow becomes the chair. The idea basically worked but it wasnt as convincing as I wanted because the lighting was such a problem. You really cant have such a strong shadow unless it's dark in the room except for 1 light source. So I could get the illusion to work from one angle perfectly, but when I changed angles then the lighting was a problem. So I decided to just edit the main video showing only the one angle.

This is a very well known effect that has been performed a countless number of times. I wanted to try and different version by using the black lights and also to add a little production value instead of just simply showing the effect.
The effect works by using a formula that provides the specific length for each string. When all of the pendulums are started at once the patterns will start to form. The pattern resets after about 1 minute. I glued white poster board on the sides of the nuts and used a black light, causing the white to glow.

Be sure to watch the entire video to see all of the patterns that are created. At the end of the video there are 2 links to watch 2 more versions of the video.
The effect works by using a formula that provides the specific length for each string. When all of the pendulums are started at once the patterns will start to form. The pattern resets after about 1 minute. There were 3 sources of light causing 3 shadows to appear on the poster board.

I was at a garage sale a couple of years ago and I saw these 2 canes. They looked old and cool. I also thought they were curiously heavy. So I decided to buy them for 25 dollars. After I got home, I took a closer look and noticed something strange. What I found after that was truly shocking and a nice surprise.

I'm giving this bank away. I'll randomly pick a winner by generating a random number. I will announce the winner in a week or 2 by adding the winners name to the description of this video. Be sure to favorite the video so you can come back to see if the winner has been chosen.
This is a really cool illusion coin bank. The coins appear to shrink when the coin falls into the box. Even when you study it up close it's very hard to tell how it works. The box claims that you can actually fit 50 quarters. It's a neat item to have on your desk.

This is an oldie but a goodie. Even though I have seen this demonstration before, everything I see it I still can't believe it. I decided to give it a try myself and sure enough it works easily. You definitely should give it a try. It's fun to take the ruler and balance the tip on the end of your finger. Your instinct is to not want to let go because you feel like it'll fall but it doesn't. If you decided to try this trick just becareful with the hammer not to drop it on your toes or the floor.
And also you will need to use a hammer that has an edge where the grip stops about halfway up. You need the edge for the string to catch on to.

I used poster board and tape to create the apple. It took about 10 hours to complete this project. It was fairly difficult to get everything lined up and there are some mistakes. But overall was happy with the final look.

Hey everyone. I love this style of illusion and thought pacman would be perfect for it. This illusion uses the same concept as the rubiks cube poster. This video is not about creating a new concept, it's about a new design being applied to a concept. (Think of it like a painter using
the same lighting and shading techniques for each painting he creates.)
I've included links to templates so you can make this poster at home.
Basically cut all the white areas out, fold and tape.

This middle link represent the middle section of the poster. The top link represents the left side and the bottom link represents the right.
The poster will work with only 1 middle section ..but I used 2 in this video. You can use as many as you'd like.
A lot of people ask if the illusion works in person. The illusion actually works much better in person. It works best if you close one eye and then move back and forth. The effect stands out so much ..it almost makes you dizzy. If you stand far enough back ..you can even get the illusion to work with both eyes open ..which looks pretty amazing as well.

What happens in our brain when we view an optical illusion?
The information gathered by the eye is processed in the brain to create an idea or image that does not match with a physical measurement of the stimulus source.
This creation is not about if it is "obvious" or not. It's not an illusion. It's not supposed to be. It's the creation of a device that is actually fun to build and play with and I thought others would appreciate it and have fun building their own and possibly modifying the design. Better materials, different shapes, etc. So if you want to give it a try i've included a link to the template below! Good luck!
And even though the square looks orange in the video, I can assure you that the actual color is red. It just got lost in the lighting and the rendering of the video.

This is an oldie but a goodie.
Add 1/2 cup of corn starch with 1/4 cup of water.
Mix until substance is consistent
You'll need an amped speaker.
I used an 8 inch amped sub.
You'll need to generate a Sine Wave. You can download free programs that can make a Sine Wave. I used 60HZ.
I used red food coloring at the end.
It may take a little trial and error but it's worth it. :D Good luck!

After you download the template you can increase the size of the template if you'd like so that you can make a bigger version.
I tape the templates to poster board then cut with a hobby knife. I fold the poster board then use scotch tape to hold them together.
The templates are not 100% perfect. So if you build this model, you might have to squish the columns a little or move the pieces a little to get it to look just right.
These are my favorite illusions. From one angle everything looks perfectly normally until you see the balls rolling uphill. When you change the angle
of the camera you see that the ramps are not as they appeared. They are actually slanting downhill instead of uphill. It's all about the perspective
of course.
All of the work for the illusion is performed in a 3D program. The process to create these illusions is long and difficult. I basically create the
design the way it should appear and then create a duplicate of the design that will be the actual physical copy. I manipulate the duplicate in
the 3D program so that the ramps ultimately slant down but still match the original layer of the ramps that are aiming up.
Once I've created the ramps that slant down, I flatten the shapes, print them out, cut, fold and tape. The camera must be set up in the same
position that the camera in the 3D program was set to. The objects that you can create with this technique are unlimited.

I had a lot of fun creating this illusion. Ok, not really. First of all, I spent 1 week searching for the right type of lights. Every place was sold out. I just about gave up on looking but decided to try one more mom and pop store. Sure enough
they had the lights I was looking for. I really had no idea if I could pull this tron illusion off with x-mas lights but I had to give it a try. So I started the painstaking process of taping the x-mas lights to the wall. I was about 5 seconds from giving up. It was so difficult to get the lights to stay on the wall. They were contantly falling and changing positions. It took about 10 hours to complete the illusion. Overall, I was pleased with the results!

This really is one of the easiest and most amazing tricks ever. All you need is a plastic coat hanger and a coin. Balance the coin in the middle of the hanger then just start spinning the hanger around. It does take some practice but stick with it and you'll get it! If you really want to impress, learn to stop the spinning
hanger with the coin still balanced.

Hey everyone. I tried uploading this video a few days ago and there were a lot of problems with youtube. I decided to take it down and now I'm reuploading it.
And to clear up some confusion, this is not a reupload from the past. I do have similar videos using this same technique but this is a different pattern.
3D paper stairs. Is it an illusion? Sort of! For the most part it's simply an incredibly easy project with stunning results. All you need is a hobby knife and some paper.
Try it yourself!

This is one of the most amazing demonstrations of physics ever. There are no batteries, no magnets, no moving parts of any kind. It's just the metal disk and the mirrored platform. Give it a spin and it will spin over 2 minutes with a good spin.

One of the simplest illusions yet very effective. You can perform this trick directly in front of an audience and it's still just as effective. The illusion in this video takes 2 pieces of wire and when pulled, appear to never come apart.

My latest anamorphic illusion. I've had this illusion in my head for months but just never got around to doing it. It was the hardest illusion I've created so far. I couldn't have done it without the help of dxdutch. She helped me from the very start and it took us over 10 straight hours of work.
Dxdutch has her own channel on youtube. She is an amazing song writer and singer. Be sure to check her channel out and subscribe.

This illusion uses the tape from cassette tapes to create an anamorphic image of a ghetto blaster. The top parts of the radio were the easiest to work on. All we had to do was spread the tape semi-evenly. When viewed from a low angle is basically looks like a solid piece. The closer we got to the bottom of the radio, the more difficult it became. Even a small 1 inch by 1 inch piece could take 20 minutes to work on.
There were several points during the creation of the illusion that I was ready to give up. I did a few test shots when the radio was half finished and it just didnt seem to be working. But we kept going and we were pretty happy with the end result.
