Here are some suggestions for avoiding over-training:

- the "load" period should not last longer than 3 weeks
- alternate sessions of hard training with easier sessions
- incorporate at least one day of full rest per week
- reduce exterior stress factors
- avoid excessive racing periods
- in the 4th week, training intensity should be reduced and the number of rest days increased. The purpose of this "off week" is to recover from over-reaching and allow for a full regeneration of the athlete.

Bradley Wiggins has always been particularly proud of the breadth of his cycling register, taking in as it does road, time trials and track events. After finishing the sport's most demanding one-day race, the Paris-Roubaix Hell of the North, in ninth place and on the heels of the winner, Niki Terpstra, after a six-hour stint through dust clouds and past vast dunghills on the back lanes of northern France, he can now add another category to the long list: Classics contender.

For a cyclist who once specialised in the four-minute pursuit, added the dizzying Madison and then moved on to win the Tour de France, hanging tough with the best one-day specialists such as Tom Boonen, four times a winner in Roubaix, and Fabian Cancellara -- a dominant victor of the Tour of Flanders the previous weekend -- is a feat that cannot be underestimated, and it left Wiggins delighted, even if he was disappointed not to have won.

"There's a tinge of disappointment. I really had legs, even in the final, I felt strong," Wiggins said. "I was pinching myself a little bit, I don't mind admitting that." The 2012 Tour winner kept a watching brief, which is the best policy in such a long, demanding event, but had the legs to be part of the elite 11-man selection that formed with only nine kilometres remaining, after the final two of the 28 sections of cobbled lanes that make the Queen of the Classics so demanding.

As so often in the past, the gently rising lane to the exposed crossroads at Carrefour de l'Arbre and its twin section to Gruson were critical, as a lead quintet formed around Cancellara, joined a few kilometres after the cobbles were left by a sextet including Wiggins and Geraint Thomas, who were unable to match Terpstra when he broke clear six kilometres from the finish.

"I just felt outnumbered," Wiggins said. "And the run-in was quite fast in the last five kilometres. Terpstra played it perfectly with [his team-mates] Stybar and Boonen." Indeed, Terpstra was able to play the team card, with his Omega Pharma-Quick-Step team boasting three of the 11 lead group. The chase behind was fitful, partly because any potential pursuers knew they would drag the Dutchman's team-mates into contention, but also because by this phase of Paris-Roubaix even those at the front have tipped over the edge into exhaustion.

Unfortunately for Wiggins, the only team-mate still on hand was Thomas and he was anything but fresh. He had left most of his energy on the road in an escape with Boonen which lasted over 40 kilometres of the final phase, and which ultimately proved fruitless. Terpstra rode into the velodrome finish with a 20 second advantage; behind him the sprint from the chasing group was won by the German sprinter John Degenkolb, with Thomas in seventh, and Wiggins ninth in the same time.

Thomas, once a winner of the junior Paris-Roubaix, is probably the best bet for a first British victory in the elite race at some future date but Wiggins has not ruled out a return either. This was, after all, the best ride by any cyclist with the Tour de France on his palmares in 22 years, since Greg LeMond -- then in the twilight of his career -- finished ninth in 1992.

Since Eddy Merckx's heyday in the 1970s, barely any Tour de France champions have braved the Roubaix cobbles, because there is a strong chance of crashing and compromising the build-up to the Tour.

Bernard Hinault famously won in 1981, while the late Laurent Fignon managed third in 1988, but these are rarities which put Wiggins's Sunday in Hell into perspective.

Garmin Edge 1000 Review: Is It Worth $600?

The Garmin Edge 1000 is being unveiled this week in California. It will carry over many of the training features of the Edge 810 and the navigation features of the Edge Touring, as well as adding a few new options in a higher-resolution display.

The Edge 1000 features a 3in touchscreen display with full-color 240x400 resolution, compared to the Edge 810's 2.7in display with 160x240 resolution. Claimed battery life is up to 15 hours.

The Edge 1000 will be available this spring for US$599.99 alone or US$699.99 with a heart-rate strap and speed/cadence sensors.

Taking a cue from Strava, Garmin is offering Edge 1000 users the ability to find and compete on segments created on the Garmin Connect site. A later software release will allow users to plan rides using multiple segments, Garmin said. In the meantime, riders can compete against their previous best or the segment leader's time with the Virtual Partner feature. Riders can also be notified when a Garmin Connect segment is coming up.

When used in conjunction with the newly remodeled Garmin Connect site and a Bluetooth-paired smartphone, Edge 1000 users upload and download ride data, and let friends and family track their ride progress in real time.

In addition to pushing data out, riders with a smartphone can pair it to the Edge 1000 to view incoming calls and text message alerts on their handlebars.


As with the Edge Touring, the Edge 1000 comes loaded with maps and points of interest, such as parks and trails. Riders familiar with a Garmin vehicle GPS will recognize the turn-buy-turn features.

It is unclear how well the navigation features will work for cycling-friendly routes. Riders can enter a target distance -- how far they want to ride -- and the Edge 1000 will offer up to three routes, with the opportunity to review the elevation profiles before choosing. But unlike vehicle GPS units that have huge databases of road maps to pull from, with defaults being larger roads, the world does not yet have a comprehensive source for ideal bike routes. BikeRadar will test this feature and others as soon as we receive a demo unit, and we will report back.

Edge 1000 display and compatibility -- lots of options
Garmin is hoping the Edge 1000 will gain traction with road, mountain and touring riders, with a 3in touchscreen that works with gloves and in the wet, the company says. An ambient light sensor lights up the screen when riding at night or even when going into a tunnel. Riders also can set the Edge 1000 horizontally for a wide view in addition to the standard vertical mount.

As with the Egde 810, the Edge 1000 can be paired with ANT+ products such as heart rate monitors, power meters and speed/cadence sensors.

The Edge 1000 is compatible with the latest Shimano Di2 electric systems (that have Shimano's D-Fly system), displaying the current gear on the screen.

The 98th edition of the Tour of Flanders was marred by countless crashes, but the most troubling off all was the collision between Garmin-Sharp rider Johan Vansummeren and female spectator, who was in critical condition following the incident.

The crash happened at a roundabout after 60 kilometres of racing in Wielsbeke. The pace in the peloton was high, as they chased a group of 11 riders who had formed a breakaway. Where a traffic island split the road in two halves, video shows an older woman, a young boy and a man were standing on a raised island, and riders were passing the obstacle on both sides. Suddenly, Johan Vansummeren (Garmin-Sharp) came crashing into the group, directly striking the older woman, knocking her into the ground.

The race organisation did not want to communicate much about the situation, stating only, "She is still in the intensive care unit in hospital. The organization regrets the accident and sympathizes with the family," in a press release.

At the time of publication it was known that she is 65-years-old. Her condition was reportedly critical but stable. During the race Sporza commentators said that she was undergoing brain surgery. It was not communicated where the woman was hospitalized, but the nearest hospital was in Waregem.

Vansummeren, the surprise winner of cycling's biggest one-day race Paris-Roubaix in 2011, was briefly hospitalized, but by the time the race was over the tall Belgian was already back at the team bus with a stitched eye. "I'm alright despite a few stitches and a black eye. That's really not important now. I got a massive scare," Vansummeren said. The 33-year-old was clearly emotional about what happened and didn't want to go into details.

"It's a crash. How it happened? I don't want to into detail," Vansummeren said. "It happened at a roundabout but what and how doesn't matter now. It only leads to talking about guilt and the only thing that matters now is that this woman gets better."

"I feel really bad that other people are affected. The fact that this lady got hurt bothers me much more than the crash. Crashes are part of cycling but it's really sad for the family. I really hope she'll be making progress," Vansummeren said. "I don't know who she is. It was all very hectic. Maybe... during the upcoming days I'll leave the family alone and then I'll contact them."

When asked about the reason for the multiple crashes Vansummeren felt the several traffic inhibitors were to blame. "This is the top. There are a lot of spectators. It's a hype. Twice or thrice a year riders head to a race with this tension. It's all about small roads and riding at the front. Every year incidents happen. The biggest part of the problem is what they're planting on the roads. There are more crashes but there's much more junk on the road too."

"I don't think I'll find sleep tonight. It had to become a beautiful Sunday but it's anything but that," Vansummeren concluded.

Garmin Sharp released a short statement on their Facebook page after the incident: "He {Vansummeren] suffered facial lacerations and has been released from the hospital. He, and we as a team, send our thoughts and best wishes to the spectator involved." the statement read.

Wesley Sulzberger (Drapac Pro Cycling) made a triumphant start to his assault on the 2014 National Road Series as he outlasted a disintegrating breakaway while in the women's event, Ruth Corset (Holden Women's Cycling) recorded a solo victory in the opening stage of the Jarvis Subaru Adelaide Tour on Thursday.

Sulzberger took out the 85km race three seconds ahead of Cameron Peterson (Peloton Sports/Turramurra Cyclery) and a further 39 seconds ahead of teammate Jonathan Cantwell.

"The race was really aggressive before that main breakaway went and I was expecting some of the other bigger teams to launch across but that didn't happen so I was really surprised. We had Jonathan Cantwell up there with me so it was nice to have a bit of support and it paid off in the end," Sulzberger said after the stage.

An 11-man breakaway broke free from the peloton after 20km of racing and both Avanti Racing and Budget Forklifts missed the move which included Sulzberger. The maximum advantage the break enjoyed was 2:20 before the peloton started to put the hammer down before the base of Adelaide's infamous corkscrew climb.

With the breakaway falling away and the climbers of the peloton breathing down his neck, Sulzberger played his hand on the climb taking Peterson with him. "Jonathon Cantwell led me into the climb and was riding for me, which put a bit of pressure on me to finish off the job. I went out on the first hair-pin and attacked and went on with Cameron [Peterson],' Sulzberger explained after claiming the line honours.

"Coming over the top of the climb I was with Cam and he was riding really strong. We rode to the finish together and I think Cam was feeling pretty good because he ramped up the pace and I let him do that. I kicked off his wheel in the last 500 metres.

"Jonathan Cantwell was third on the stage as well so that was a really good effort by him to scramble over the climb and finish off with the rest of the guys, and finish off the sprint for third."

Third placed Cantwell won a three-up sprint for the podium ahead of National Road Series leader Joe Cooper (Avanti Racing) who had jumped ahead of the peloton and fellow breakaway rider Jackson Mawby (Satalyst Giant).

In the women's race, 2012 NRS Champion Ruth Corset (Holden Women's Cycling) put on a dominant ride through the hills of Adelaide, showing off her climbing prowess in the opening stage of the Jarvis Subaru Adelaide Tour and opening race of the women's 2014 NRS.

"I just had to attack at the bottom [of corkscrew]," said Corset who was runner up in the series in 2013. "My teammates got on the front and rode tempo and slowly rode [the break] back just before the big descent into the gorge.

"It was pretty fast on the descent, but they positioned me well coming into the climb where I attacked."

Corset took out the testing stage 32 seconds ahead of Lizzie Williams (Specialized) and 35 seconds in front of Victoria's Tessa Fabry (Jayco/Apollo/VIS). Earlier in the race, Lauretta Hanson (Bicycle Superstore) had attempted to solo to victory and built a 50 second advantage but was caught with less than 30km to go.

"We didn't really panic, we wanted to keep it together until the bottom of the climb because I was planning to attack and get away," said Corset.

I know if someone did a video where they road a bicycle, ate some fruit and told people to eat more carbs, Id be PISSED and get my marketing agency to send in the big guns.

Unfortunately fruit is so expensive and usually pretty poor tasting for most people starting a fullyraw lifestyle. In this video we give a fullyraw cereal option. I often have this for dinner when travelling or have ran out of ripe fruit that day and want to save my fruit stash for the following days breakfast or lunch.

For an even more budget option you can use rice. Get a rice cooker from a thrift store. Buy organic rice in bulk. Same with organic sugar. They both keep very well and don't need to be put in the fridge and are ALWAYS ripe. Do your best to get your fruits in but don't beat yourself up if you are struggling to stay fullyraw. Better to be fully carbed up than fully stressed out.

Cycling is the best cardio on the planet is you want to get mega fit. You can ride to work, ride to school, ride to the shops, ride to dates, ride to the post office or just ride for the sake of riding.

No other sport can provide the conditioning like cycling can. Get an entry level road bike from Giant, Specialized, Cannondale or Trek. 

Buy it from a shop that has a good rep for bike fit. Bike fit is VITAL!! Make sure you get the shop to give you a bike fit before you leave the store. Mark all your measurements with a white out pen ie seat height, saddle angle/fore/aft, cleat position, handlebar angle etc.

This way if anything slips you have a reference point to go back too. 

 
If you want a bike that will last a decade and be inspiring to ride, get something with at least a shimano 105 level groupset. Good products allow for good fitness. Good fitness allows for a slim toned physique.

Get mountain bike shoes with clip in pedals. Road shoes are very hard to walk around in. I use mountain bike shoes. The shimano A530 is a good starting pedal as is the shimano T780. Check out my video 'the truth about cycling shoes'. You don't need clip in shoes at the start but you will need them eventually if higher fitness levels aka fitter looking body is desired.

Drink enough water so you are hitting the bushes every 2 hours. Your mates might call you 'walnut bladder' but your recovery will be peak and so will your blood volume.
