Carbon is a good material for bicycles BUT it is not going to handle the abuse alloy bikes will. Carbon cracks when an alloy bike would just dent. If you are buying your first bike and on a budget I do recommend buying an alloy bike first.

My original rim was a Velocity Aerohead OC built up in 2009. Ive had this one rear wheel since Feb 2009. Velocity off set rim, heavy duty DT spokes, power tap PRO+ rear hub. Always coming out of true despite custom bicycle wheel building and a bit flexy even for me at 65kg approx. I thought it was just how it was. It had been tensioned by many mechanics who specialized in custom bicycle wheel building over the last 4 years. In NYC, Brisbane, Thailand, Radelaide etc. Last time it when out of tension I gave it to Kim Hentschke @ North Adelaide Cycles to have a crack. Now this was December 2012. I then rode just on 6190km in Jan and mostly on that rear wheel. I do ride dirt roads, down gutters etc so not exactly a smooth rider on my stuff. This wheel despite being on its last legs with cracked eyelets and massively concave rim braking surface from excessive wear stayed absolutely true the last 4.5 months. I got it built up today with a new rim as it was getting close to exploding with the 15 cracked eyelets and extensively worm braking surface. Other mechanics just blamed the power tap hub for the flex. As the wheel got older they blame the worn rim. Kim just said 'lets do it right!' and he did. I don't know anyone as good in custom bicycle wheel building.
You can see in this video the cracked eyelets @ approx 7 o'clock. About 15 of these were on the rim. Just hair line cracks from 4 years of riding.
So yeah, just giving Kim Hentschke custom bicycle wheel building a thumbs up. Today I learned he was head custom bicycle wheel builder at Avanti when they used to custom hand build wheels before going off shore. He has the original custom wheel building stand which is from Holland during the 1950's, in his shop and uses that. Working at Avanti Kim was literally building over 10 000 wheels a year!! I just bought a new bike and he recommend I bring the new wheels in for a 'proper tensioning' lol! I certainly will. Nice guy too. Not many shops you get to speak with the owner as the main customer contact.

I know this January after cycling 6190km on Strava that my watts per kg didnt really change much. How ever when I tapered right back I set a pb up this Corkscrew climb watts per kg wise. Ive learned that positive attitude is KEY in climbing well. You really have to think the climb in a positive manner. You have to let your body just relax and remind it that the pain is fine and nothing dangerous and just to continue on forward.
Hey, Im no pro rider. Im 36 and work 70hours a week behind my lap top. I like getting the most out of my time on the bike and my power meter is my best friend on training rides. It shows me 3 things.
1. What am I doing NOW?
2. Is this wattage part of todays goal?
3. Am I getting better over time?
I use a cycleops powertap PRO+. My naked rear wheel with just rim tape, hub and rim is 1280g. So yeah, you don't need super light to go alright. :)

Decided to quit being a vegan and go back to the status quo. Too much stress on the internet getting us down. What if I want to run a marathon one day? What about bench press 360lbs?
