A G&F Extra: Musical Theatre Trivia with Option Up!
A G&F Extra: Musical Theatre Trivia with Option Up!

For director and choreographer Chris Pazdernik and music director Aaron Benham, up staging each other isn't always a theatre faux pas. The two Chicago theatre pro's—whose work includes shows with the Bailiwick and Porchlight Musical Theatre—first started working together when they concepted a cabaret show at Wicker Park's Davenport's club. A combination of extreme talent and a riotous sense of humor, the two are a match made in musical theatre heaven.

Now, with a few more theatre credits in the bag for them both, they are joining forces again for a second season of Option Up! It's their monthly cabaret slash live talk show hybrid for musical theatre lovers. Yes, you read that correctly. With Aaron riffing on the piano while Chris goes through the comings and goings in the Chicago theatre scene, the bubbly pair welcome a diverse crew of theatre professionals to join their campy and sweet set. And like the classic saying goes: what happens on the Option Up! stage, stays on the Option Up! stage. The duo invite their guests to perform and talk shop—and from the energy they brought to our G&F shoot, we give them two thumbs up for this concept. With one season under their belt, they're kicking off season two at Stage 773 on August 10th, performing the second Sunday of each month through November 9th.

In honor of #GFMusical month, we invite Chris and Aaron over to play a little Musical Theatre trivia—may the best Broadway baby win.

Meet Rachel Rockwell. The Chicago-based director and choreographer recently took on a very tall order: the revival of Lerner and Loewe's Brigadoon. And what a milestone it is! It's the first splashy stage version of the Broadway classic in over thirty years. What's more? Handpicked by Liza Lerner, daughter of famed lyricist Jay Lerner, Rachel armed herself with a talented team of theatre professionals to remount one of the most unique stories in musical theatre history.

The show is vibrant and happy. But all that musical theatre lightness is undercut with high stakes in the love department. Dance is an artform in the sleepy village of Brigadoon, a town that comes to life one day every 100 years, and the musical numbers that Rachel envisioned light up the stage with energy and purpose. And men in kilts.

We visit Rachel at the Goodman Theatre after opening night. From the plush velvet seats of the cozy theatre house, Rachel walks us through the making of Brigadoon—from perfecting her scottish accent, the family tartans of the highland clans to the research behind the remount, excuse the musical theatre lyric that's about to come your way: It's almost like being in love this season at the Goodman.

Brigadoon plays through August 17th at the Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn Street. Visit GoodmanTheatre.org for more information and tickets.

With a star-studded team—including NY-based photographer Billy Rood, LA-based choreographer Kathryn Burns and America's Next Top Model favorite Jaslene Gonzalez—G&F presents an explosion of lights, camera and a whole lot of action. We're tipping our hats to the classic American musical and we had a helluva a fun time doing it.

Come take a peek behind the scenes with the G&F team from the model casting to the final glitzy shoot. We guarantee that you'll be humming your favorite Broadway tune in no time at all.

We have a secret to confess: we're musical theatre geeks. From the glitz and glamour, the sequins and curtain calls, we're taking a cue from Broadway to deliver a Summer Swim editorial that is as hot as the center spot. With one-piece suits that remind us of rehearsal wear of days past, we're rocking our best Fosse poses to share summer's sweetest. And with a supporting cast of three models, lead by Jaslene Gonzalez, that sizzle in the summer's steam heat, this entire issue is dedicated to the Great White Way. This is hats off to Bob Fosse—it's time to take center stage, Broadway Baby, this is our time to shine.

It's G&F's Summer Culture Issue—and we're going crazy for all things musical theatre. While we love the classics—our latest fashion editorial was a tribute to the jazz legend Bob Fosse!—we've got our eyes on the horizon as well. And pulling in at full steam is The Last Ship. With music by Sting, the brand new musical previewing in Chicago before it's Broadway debut is a story of an English seafaring town on a quest to preserve their daily grind: the shipyard.

We go backstage of the new project to talk with one of the show's stars, Rachel Tucker. Hailing from Belfast, Ireland, this stunning talent made a name for herself early on in her career on a BBC talent show-themed TV series. From there, she graced the West End stages in London and, after the Chicago engagement, she's just moments away from making her Broadway debut in the role of Meg in the critically acclaimed new work.

Rachel invites us into her dressing room at the Bank of America theater to talk about her family band, pre-show routine and calling Chicago home for the last two months.

It's G&F's Green Goddess issue! From al fresco food (http://youtu.be/zOVrFmqfdqU) and herbing 101 (http://glossedandfound.com/spotlight/sara-gasbarra/), we've met some fab females doing good in the name of all things outdoors. And here's another one to add to the list: Joanne Green of On the Ledge Landscaping.

With a name like Joanne Green, it must be destiny to end up a gardener. But you need a lot more than a last name to make it in the biz. With a background in landscaping that has spanned the globe—Joanne's had work visas in London, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Beijing!—she's now focusing on chic city dwellers and adding a little pop of floral fun to small spaces in the city.

G&F co-host Candis Hickman catches up with Joanne outdoors to get some of the basics down. From picking out punchy flowers like the Patriot Bright Violet Geranium to learning some lingo, Candis and Joanne concoct an overflowing flower box that is delightful and will stay bright and cheery well into the Fall.

As a self proclaimed garden girl, Sara Gasbarra lends a helping hand—or green thumbs rather—to restaurants around the city in building and maintaining vegetable gardens. From the Hilton Chicago to Nellcôte, this jolly green goddess knows a thing or two about having some good thymes. (If you liked what we did there, just wait until you check out the puns in our video below). Sara turned her love of gardening into a full functioning urban garden consulting biz where she can implement sustainable and organic practices in unconventional spaces. And for the layman, we love her advice for experimenting with herbs in your own space. In between getting her hands dirty, she snaps beautiful greenery on her inspiring instagram account.

In the spirit of G&F, things get a little punny as Sara walks us through a super simple DIY of chive blossom vinegar and a handy field guide to having fun with herbs.

For fashion lover Andrew Wayne, the phrase "If you dream it, you can do it," has never been more real. Case and Point: The Chicago-based designer had a dream one night of walking through a pine forest and uncovered plexiglass boxes of painted canvas bags. Freaky? Yes. Unbelievable? No. Pine + Plastic was born from one quick REM cycle. Featuring hand-painted designs, Andrew has developed totes and travel pouches with panache—and a little more staying power than the handful of others we have recently retired (read: thrown away because they get too dirty). These sturdy bags feature high-grade canvas and are all fully lined with with two side pockets.

We asked 34 talented artists "What is art?" Their response? Just as varied as their work.

Art is a wonderful thing to do.
Art is Past and lifetime.
Art is Refuge.
Art is Community.
Art is A universal map.

These talented voices often go unheard. But if there is one thing we're committed to at G&F, it's spotlighting talented individuals who are reshaping the status quo. We're excited to announce a year long partnership with the non-profit organization, Project Onward.

Operating as both a studio and gallery, Project Onward's mission is to cultivate career development and professional opportunities for artists with mental and developmental disabilities.

The residents are regarded as artists first. Pride and respect exudes from every corner of the space. Project Onward not only provides the artist with the materials of their choice, but builds an esteemed community where all creativity is valued. Headed by Program Director Rob Lentz, the organization recently made the transition to Bridgeport Art Center after a long stint at the Chicago Cultural Center. The move tripled the space and allowed an expansion into printmaking and ceramic mediums for their artists.

We asked each artist to fill out a brief questionnaire about themselves, including their artistic process and what inspires them. The results are impassioned, creating vibrant and striking perspective. The artwork transcends their view of the world to give us a better understanding of the challenges faced living with disabilities. One of the questions we asked was, "If not yourself, who would you be?" The overwhelming response was they wouldn't be anybody else than themselves.

Here at G&F we treasure this organization—we are proud and excited about our partnership with Project Onward. Through each and every medium this non-profit aims to motivate change and dissolve the stigma of mental illness and developmental disabilities. They're breaking the boundaries of artistic stereotypes and celebrating diversity in all forms—a guiding principle that G&F strives to achieve and impart.

We hate to drop names, but Prabal Gurung, Tocca, Lady Gaga, Jason Wu and Rodarte are a few of the (extreme) heavy hitters who have all lined up to work with 12.29. With backgrounds in fragrance and business, Dawn and Samantha's rise to creating their business is a total movie script—complete with a scene about the former nose of a beauty brand and a room full of teddy bears. We loved the story so much, we want a sequel.

Let's get loopy! With the weather being like it is, we're suffering from a serious case of loopiness. But this is just the daily grind for Kristin Oldach of Kraeo Handmade Knits. Her wish-she-would-have-thought-about-it-for-a-bit-longer namesake line might just be our only luxury during this dreadfully long winter. And like anything—when you can't beat 'em, join 'em. So we stop over her home studio for a quick crocheting lesson. The result? She's much better than us. But crochet away, Kristin! We want as many of her chunky, funky knits that she can churn out.

We drive to the Grand Geneva with big hopes and a few dollars in spending cash. The result? A grand old time. The extremely family friendly resort might not be at the top of the list for a getaway but a quick history lesson proved that the property is sitting on a legacy of F-U-N.

Constructed in 1968 to operate as the Playboy Club, the property was host to Hugh Hefner and his bevy of beautiful babes in bunny ears—say that ten times fast!—and for the next 14 years, the bunnies entertained hundreds of card-carrying clients and big name acts. Upon arriving to the property, we catch up with Director of Facilities Jim Crothers and former Bunny Pegs Weber, who may have hung up her ears but still works on property at The Mountaintop ski slopes.

After a day on the slopes, a visit to the ski chalet is much deserved. While lunch is in order, let's get our priorities straight: drinks!

And Après Ski cocktailing is a time honored tradition. Even in Wisconsin.

Jamaica Fincher, the Grand Geneva's private party planner talks us through two simple and tasty treats to warm us up. Cheers!

A G&F Extra: Barre Bee Fit Kicks Our Butt

Don't sweat the small stuff though—the results are incredible. And with four Chicago locations, there are very few excuses not to try it out. Why G&F loves BBF? Because it's tailored to what you can do, not what you're supposed to do. Yes, the workout is in intense. Yes, it's going to make your legs feel like jelly. G&F loves VENeffect

Talk about a dynamic duo! Sisters Cecil Booth and Dr. Rebecca Booth, through years of development, have released a revolutionary product line that has taken the G&F staff by storm. Meet VENeffect, the sister's brand of anti-aging skincare solutions to reverse the signs of hormonal aging. And this isn't anti-aging just for those chasing the fountain of youth, the properties of VENeffect are universal—producing an undeniable glow and restoring skin to its peak (read: your early twenties). It's all in maxing The Venus Effect, Rebecca and Cecil's tagline referring to all the feminine wiles provided by estrogen. When estrogen begins to fluctuate later in life, VENeffect steps in to replicate the properties with its natural plant-based complex—and we thank them for it! We sit down with the sisters to talk phytoestrogens (we knew you had to read that word twice), bad hair days and more in this week's G&F Spotlight.
